I stumbled across a cool website as I was browsing online for houses. The site (http://www.walkscore.com/) will rank an address on a 1-100 scale of how easy it is to walk to the grocery store, library, etc. It's not perfect, but it seems to be a pretty good guage. Our house ranks a measly 25. How about you?

I do not agree with this website. My location ranked a 37 even though everything was less than a mile away except for the library. Part of why we picked this house was that we could walk or bike to the grocery store, Wal-Mart, restaurants, etc. if we wanted to (or had to). We also have a mall, movie theaters, bars, and coffee shops within that same one-mile radius.

I guess a mile walk is too far away to be walkable, although I would not tell that to my neighbors. Many of them (and myself) walk out of the subdivision and down the street quite a ways for daily exercise and to pet each others dogs.

I realize this is a generic website, but the convenience store that is technically closer to our house is on a fast, busy 2-lane road with no sidewalks. The further away grocery store (.3 mile further) is on a slower 4-lane road with traffic signals, crossings, and a sidewalk.

Thanks for sharing! How accurate did you think it was for your location?

Nancy: Thanks for trying out the site. I'm surprized you got such a low score for what sounds like such a walkable neighborhood. In our case, I think 25 was about right because even though most places are a mile away, we're on a hill that makes it feel like more. :) The formula counts distance as the crow flies and doesn't take into consideration hills, traffic, or anything else. It's not perfect, but I think it's a good starting point.
